Fluidised Bed Boiler Power Plant – Cyclone to Downcomer Aerodynamic Ash Barrier in Germany

The greater pressure created by the floating sleeve, combined with the unique labyrinth design and introduction of sealing air as part of the internal refractory, ensures no dust enters the expansion joint system.

Client: Ville Berrenrath

The coal processing plant Ville / Berrenrath in Hürth is one of the three remaining coal refiners of RWE Power. In addition to the coal processing plant, a power plant with a capacity of 550 MW and an electrical output of 107 MW based on fluidized bed firing is installed at the site, which covers the plant’s own requirements and feeds electricity into the grid.

Total Output:

105 MW

Date Operational: 1920
Location: Hurth, Germany
Primary Fuel: Coal
Project completed: June 2006

Original: Conventional Coal-Fired Boiler

On the downcomer from the cyclone on a fluidized bed boiler, there is an expansion joint to take the axial expansion of the duct. The normal design is a standard fabric expansion joint, with upstands of the refractory lined duct. This system operates well for a short period of time, but due to high ash content in the duct, filling, compacting, and seizing up of the joint cavity soon takes place. This blocking of the joint imposes large forces into the ducting causing cracking.

Solution: DEKOMTE Expansion Joint with Aerodynamic Ash Barrier

DEKOMTE has worked on an engineering solution that surpasses the lone function of the fabric component and considers how to develop a free envelope of space allowing movement of the duct. The greater pressure created by the floating sleeve, combined with the unique labyrinth design and introduction of sealing air as part of the internal refractory, ensures no dust enters the expansion joint system.
