Creating a hot casing frame connection for the inlet, whilst maintaining the cold casing outlet frame, utilised the best arrangement for a high cycling available solution, whilst giving making the optimum transition and integration for the exhaust duct.

Client: Derwent Cogeneration Power Plant

The Derwent cogeneration power plant consists of four GE Frame 6 MS6001B gas turbines connected to auxiliary fired Nooter Eriksen heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) boilers. There is also a 59 MWe steam turbine and surface condenser. It produces 50 MW for the National Grid, providing electricity for 180,000 homes in the surrounding area.

Original: Base Load Expansion Joint

The original frame design was insufficient for long-term base loads or short-term cycling. This low quality installation led to the inevitable breakdown of the expansion joint and adjacent structures.

Regular problems caused by this design:
  • Overheating inlet flange.
  • Overheating cold casing on the outlet flange.
  • Continual weld repairs required.
