SGT300 GT – Exhaust Collector Fabric Expansion Joints in England

Special shaping of inlet and outlet frames ensures that the entire frame surface is in contact with the gas stream and the surface facing the gas flow achieves uniform heat transfer.

Client: Siemens Testing Facility

The expansion joint is installed on a SIEMENS gas turbine test bed. Each SGT 300 (7.9 MW) gas turbine is being tested prior to its release, for engine performance and any potential faults. The expansion joint is located in the exhaust duct of the test bay of the SGT300 gas turbine, on top of the radial exhaust gas collector.

Total Output:

7.9 MW

Date Operational: 2006
Location: Lincoln, England
Primary Fuel: Natural Gas

Original: Challenges of a Test Facility

  • Constant high temperature differences as a result of frequent start-up and shut-down operations of the gas turbine.
  • Facility reaches maximum temperature in a very short time, such as trip and hot start with cold air.
  • Pressure surges through frequent and sudden load changes during test runs.
  • Necessity of rapid dismantling and reassembly of the gas turbine at the test facility (approx. 1 week).
  • Causes stress cracks and severe deformation.

Solution: DEKOMTE 3WA Expansion Joint

To obtain the highest possible cycle stability and operational life it is imperative that fatigue stresses in the steel frame are kept well below creep and yield limits during both static and dynamic operation. The insulation properties of the inner pillows must be retained and the gas sealing membrane cannot be exposed to mechanical loads and temperatures that would reduce its operational life.

Special shaping of inlet and outlet frames ensures that the entire frame surface is in contact with the gas stream and the surface facing the gas flow achieves uniform heat transfer. Thus virtually no temperature differences in both inlet and outlet frame may occur. This uniform distribution of temperature is prerequisite for the absence of temperature induced fatigue stress.

Additionally, the DEKOMTE convectors on the exterior of the expansion joint ensure a uniform temperature degradation across the fabric and secure the sealing membrane operating temperature limit. Their number and design determine the degree of heat dissipation. The DEKOMTE expansion joint solution has proven to be a a reliable, long-term and cost-effective.
